Tay Tung 10-Under quintet guns for grand slam By Henry C. Villalva
DEFENDING champion Bacolod Tay Tung High School is primed to accomplish a grand slam when the 2006 Panasonic 10-Under Basketball tournament opens on April 2 at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.
The squad, mentored by former West Negros College Mustang Rolando "Gerome" Aledron took the first conference crown of this series last year and followed it up with the well-deserved championship victory in the recent Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural Educational Association 10-Under meet.
Tay Tung is the pre-tournament favorite in this development league organized by the Basketball Unified sports (BUS) Group headed by businessman-sportsman Bing Soyao considering the presence of the prolific Kib Montalbo and a reliable supporting cast composed of Zachary Enriquez, Frantz Chua - grandson of basketball patron Archie Chua, Jan Dormido, John Aposaga, Armand Guevarra, Roland Malate, Arriola, Dipol, Nieles, Bayquin, Ramirez and Sibaya.
Montalbo, son of former Negros Basketball Association (NBA) hotshot Roger Montalbo of JM-QM fame, is tipped to lead his team anew with his all-around court savvy against opposing teams in the 2nd conference.
In a meeting of team representatives held last Tuesday at Apollo Restaurant, Hilado Street, Capitol Shopping Center, the teams that confirmed their participation in this series include Bacolod Tay Tung High School A and B, St. John's Institute A and B, Trinity Christian School and Mansilingan Christian Academy.
Also expected to confirm their entry before the opening day are teams from University of St. La Salle, St. Scholastica's Academy and Don Bosco Technical Institute of Victorias City.
Meanwhile, the team from St. Rose of Lima School begged off from joining the competition this time around, due to the scheduled vacation of majority of the players in the lineup.
On Tuesday's coaches and team representatives' meeting, SJI coach and former WNC Mustang Jake Azucena suggested that team Bs of participating schools be allowed to enter the semi-final round of the tournament in case they qualify.
This is contrary to the previously announced rule that team Bs may not qualify for the post-elimination round.
Henry Doble, who presided during the meeting, said the matter will be taken up with the tournament committee for final decision.
