2 died in road mishap
By Candy S. Genovea

TWO persons died in two separate road accidents over the weekend.

Jose Romio Sr., 43, of Barangay 10, San Juan, Bacolod City did not reach the hospital alive after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a jeepney in front of a bottling company in Barangay Mansilingan Saturday morning.

The jeepney was driven by Mark Edsel Mansalapus, 32, a resident of Purok 9, Barangay La Granjam, La Carlota City, Negros Occidental Saturday morning.

Police investigation indicated that Romio was about to enter the bottling company's vicinity when the incident happened.

His companion, Uldarico Meniao, 40, of Purok Himaya, Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City was overthrown by the impact of the collision. He suffered injuries and was rushed to the Riverside Medical Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, a trisikad driver died after a car bumped on him in Barangay Granada Sunday evening.

Trisikad driver Fernando Parra of Burgos-Cometa streets was traveling in the same direction as the Nissan Vanette driven by Alerton Dayot Jr., 28, was when the car bumped him.

Parra was brought to the Doctor's Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Dayot is now detained at the lock up cell of Police Precinct 5. He said he did not notice the trisikad driven by Parra as it was nighttime and that the trisikad had no reflectors.

Traffic Management Unit Chief Juanito Balinas said most of the traffic accidents happen because of the recklessness of drivers.

He said that drivers must also consider the safety of other people, be it their passengers or the pedestrians.

Balinas added that they have launched the Task Force Semana Santa to ensure the safety of travelers during the Holy Week.

The task force will control the flow of traffic in some points of the province. Checkpoints will also be setup.

Bacolod City Police Office Director Pedro Merced said most drivers in Bacolod don't know the traffic regulations well.

"Applicants for the driver's license must be screened thoroughly so we will know if those would-be drivers know the traffic rules," he said.

Merced further said that the police will be on red alert this Holy Week. Operative will be deployed in churches, terminals, airports and sea ports.
