THE summer football season in Negros Occidental officially kicked off Monday with the staging by the Negros Occidental Football Association of the Red Ribbon Under-15 tournament at the West Negros College pitch and the Under-17 Inter-Club Provincial Championship at the University of St. La Salle grounds.
In Monday's opening matches, powerhouse San Carlos City displayed its bid to finish strong in this series by blanking host University of St. La Salle, 14-0, to justify its status as among the top seeds in their division.
In the Red Ribbon Under-15 competition at the West Negros College pitch, the Rolando Ian Treyes-mentored St. Benilde Integrated School-side edged a hard-fighting Andres Bonifacio Elementary School II Football Club, 5-1.
Neil Patrick Quizada, Rowel Bayato and Kevin Millan converted for St. Benilde in the 3rd, 10th and 34th minutes while Edgardo Cudico's 69th minute goal prevented a shutout for coach Ulyses Rallos' booters.
Bago City Football Club was leading Handumanan United Football Club, 2-1, at the end of the first period in a match that appeared headed for a deadlock as of press time.
Abes II FC tries to bounce back into the win column today when it takes on Negros Occidental High School in the first match of the U-15 Red Ribbon event scheduled at 8 a.m., Handumanan United FC also guns for a win in their 9:30 a.m. matchup against Talisay FC while St. Benilde IS may find themselves in a real test when they meet San Carlos City FC in the 1 p.m. encounter.
This will be followed by the clash between to Southern sides - Bago FC and Pontevedra FC- scheduled at 2:30 p.m. and the last match at 4 p.m. featuring Victorias FC against Valladolid FC.
Meanwhile, action in the Under-17 series over at the USLS pitch starts at 8 a.m. today with host USLS gunning for a win against Victorias FC while San Carlos City aims to notch win No. 2 when it collides with Bago City FC followed by the matchup between Negros Occidental High School and West Negros College.
The Wesnecans, mentored by Samuel de Oca, already posted a no-sweat victory over a no-show Sagay City FC on opening day after the Sagay squad withdrew at the last minute, according to Nofa Deputy General Secretary Warren Concepcion.
All semis and finals matches in both divisions will be played at the USLS-pitch on April 21.
