'No need for Task Force Adeva'
By Roberto L. Bacasong

NEGROS Occidental Provincial Police Director Charles Calima Jr. said Wednesday that there's no need to create a task force that will look into the death of Rico Adeva.

Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.

Calima said they now have leads in the slaying of the Task Force Mapalad community organizer for Silay and Talisay cities.

He refused to divulge any of these though.

Adeva, 39, of Hacienda del Fuego II, Barangay Bagtic, Silay City was gunned down Saturday afternoon by three unidentified persons while crossing Imbang River in Bagtic.

He was with his wife, Nenita, when the incident occurred.

Calima said another case conference would be held Thursday to be attended by the chiefs of police from Talisay, Victorias and Silay. Their respective investigators will also be present.

"I personally do follow up on the units tasked to investigate the case. We have case conferences every other day with officers and investigators of Silay, Talisay and Victorias Police Offices, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and the Crime Laboratory personnel," said Calima.

We have also invited the TF Mapalad officials to attend our case conference like what we did on Tuesday, Calima added.

"We are checking all leads. We have to separate those considered as pure speculations from facts. We hope to hear new developments in the case conference today".

The provincial director assures the victim's family that justice will be served soon.

Meanwhile, the members of the Sugar Workers Alliance in Negros (Swan) vehemently condemned the killing of Adeva and blamed the incident on the government.

In their press statement, the group said the killing clearly shows the hypocrisy of the government - dominated by capitalists and present-day landlords - and the bankruptcy of its Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (Carp).

In a separate press statement, Pandayan para sa Sosyalistang Pilipinas (Pandayan) also condemned the murder of Adeva, who is one of their members.

Jose Maria Dimaandal, the group's public information officer, said that it is unfortunate that Adeva became another statistic in the on-going campaign of summary executions against activists around the country.

"It is no secret that violence related to agrarian reform has been happening in rural communities in Negros and around the country."

Pandayan is calling on the Filipino people and the international community to break their silence on the Arroyo administration's grotesque human rights record.
