Panaad chess tourney set April 24-27 By Henry C. Villalva
THE Panaad Sportsfest 2006 Chess Tournament gets staged on April 24 to 27 at the Panaad Sports and Recreational Park in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City organized by the Chess Players Federation of Negros (CPFN) and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
The competition is a two-board tournament to be participated in by teams representing various local government units (LGUs) in the province of Negros Occidental, according to Kim Dumdum, the NCFP coordinator in Bacolod and Negros Occidental.
Prizes for the tournament will be announced later by the provincial sports development office headed by sports officer Manuel de Oro since the event is part of the calendar of sports activities for this year's Panaad sa Negros festival which officially kicks off on Saturday, April 22.
Dumdum also told SUN.STAR Bacolod that the Panaad Chess event will serve as tune-up preparation for the Western Visayas chess contingent that will compete in this year's Palarong Pambansa scheduled next month in Naga City.
"Since five of the players representing our region in this year's Palaro come from Negros Occidental, they are seeing action in this event as part of their preparations for the Palaro and I believe this will help them in their preparation," Dumdum said.
The categories to be contested in the Panaad Sportsfest 2006 Chess Tournament are elementary boys and girls (13 years old and below) and high school boys and girls (17 years old and below).
Dumdum also said plans are afoot for the putting up of a Chess Academy of Negros, a grassroots training project which is the brain-child of former Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) chairman and former University of St. La Salle president Bro. Rolando Dizon, FSC together with chess and school representatives from USLS, University of Negros Occidental - Recoletos and West Negros College.
"If this takes off soon it will be a big boost to our grassroots chess development program in Bacolod City and the province," Dumdum said.
