Panique, Babiera banner crack Himamaylan squad By Henry C. Villalva
A YOUTHFUL Himamaylan City team bannered by marathon standouts Eric Panique and Anthony Babiera is expected to challenge even the veteran squads from other local government units (LGU's) when the Run Negros Run Marathon Relay gets staged on June 20-23.
It is organized by the Negros Occidental Track and Field Association (NOTAFA) headed by Roger Banzuela.
Panique, who finished in the top 10 of the national Milo marathon two years ago after topping the regional eliminations, is considered by many as one of the promising young Negrense marathon runners on the scene together with his stablemate Anthony Babiera who together with the team composed of Michael Empres, Ruben Empres, Rommel and Rowell Hulleza as well as Juvilon Alvaaro, Allan Sitchon and Raden Vergara who recently dominated the 8th 21-kilometer Tri-Mountain Resort Marathon in Bago City as well as the Victorias City 40-kilometer marathon relay.
The Himamaylan City squad is one of the top seeds of the forthcoming Negros marathon relay which is billed as the return of the Run Negros Run project of the 1980s which produced many of the province's top marathon runners including Himamaylan's team trainer Rodolfo Rizalde.
Also expected to field top-rate teams in this event which is co-sponsored by the Office of the Governor, the Provincial Sports Development Office under OIC Manuel De Oro, the Negros Association of Chief Executives (ACE), City of Escalante and the Negros Sports Alliance, are Escalante City, Victorias City, Cadiz City and defending champion Bago City, among others.
The deadline for the submission of final lineups and final confirmation of entries is on May 25, according to Banzuela.
As specified in the event's rules, a participating team is to be composed of 16 runners, 1 coach/trainer, team manager and utility.
The first lap is from Hinobaan to Kabankalan City which covers 102.6 kilometers; the second lap is from Kabankalan to Don Salvador Benedicto (136.1 kilometers); third lap is from Don Salvador Benedicto to Escalante City (9.14 kilometers) and the fourth and final lap is from Escalante City to Bacolod City which is 95.7 kilometers.
Prospective participating teams can call the University of St. La Salle Varsity Sports Office through telephone numbers 434-69-29 and 432-11-85 for more details regarding the event.
