Mother's Best By Jan Carlo Sevilla SU Masscom Intern
THE earliest Mother's Day celebration can be traced back to the spring day celebrations in ancient Greece to honor Rhea, mythical mother of the gods.
In the 1600s, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday" on the fourth Sunday of Lent. At that time, many of England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. Since most jobs were far from their homes, the servants live in the homes of their employers.
On Mothering Sunday, the servants were given a day off and encouraged to go home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake called the Mothering Cake was often brought to provide a festive touch.
As Christianity spread throughout Europe and the rest of the world, the celebration changed to honor the "Mother Church," the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time, the church festival blended with Mothering Sunday celebration. People began honoring their mothers and the church.
The best part of being a woman is to be a mother and to see her children trod the path she has chosen. Mothers only want what's best for their children, from the simple to complex things. To be a mother is a difficult task - it needs responsibility, patience, guidance, affection, and most of all, love.
A Mother's special love
Many of us quarrel with our mothers. We don't want them to rule our lives. We don't want them to nag and make decisions for us. But, as the saying goes, "Mothers know best."
Imagine life without Mom. Imagine if your mother abandoned you when you were born. What would you be? How would you live?
A mother is responsible for her family and guides it to the right path. No mother would want her children to lose the path of life. Certainly no mother in her proper senses would want her children to get hurt. Mothers are possessive. They want everything in place. And they want their children to grow up disciplined and dignified. They want what is best for us.
Sometimes it gets irritating when our mothers baby us. When we do something wrong, we are grounded and punished. Remember the times when we wanted to leave our homes because of the way our mothers discipline us?
Definitely Moms are our Moms. They carried us for nine months, made us see this beautiful world, and cared for us from the day we were born. We are all connected to our mothers, "luksong dugo."
We may get spoiled. At times we lack motherly love. But we should always love our mothers with all our hearts. Give them all the appreciation we need to give and show them how blessed we are to have a mother.
Loving our parents signifies how we love ourselves and how we take good care of our life. We need to thank them for the lessons they taught us, the mistakes that changed us to be right, and all the love they have given us.
We realize how blessed we are to have our mothers at our side when we see children hunger for a mother's love, for a mother to cry on, lean to, and give them the love they long for.
Thanks for mothers. Pray for those who don't have parents. To all mothers, be they single, working, or house Moms, as well as all dads who are also mothers. Happy Mother's Day!
