Church leader to Negrenses: Go ahead! Watch 'Da Vinci Code'
CONTRARY to his brothers in the faith who gave the movie "The Da Vinci Code" flak and discouraged the people from watching it, vicar general of the Diocese of Bacolod Monsignor Victorino Rivas had a positive outlook of the movie.
Rivas encouraged the people to "satisfy their curiosity."
He said the Catholic officials in Bacolod and Negros Occidental are not worried about the content of the movie.
Though, some Catholic conservatives consider the movie as "blasphemous" primarily because it tells that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had a relationship, this does not concern Rivas, saying it is just based on fiction.
"We, in the Diocese of Bacolod, believe that the movie is basically meant for commercial and entertainment purposes," he said.
What is important, Rivas said, is for the Catholic faithful to establish a solid belief that Jesus Christ is our Savior.
Rivas also disclosed that he even encouraged his staff at the Bishop's Palace to watch the movie and see for themselves the difference between the writings in the Bible and the story written by Dan Brown.
"Dan Brown is just a novelist and not a historian so why should we believe in him?" Rivas said, adding that people nowadays are more intelligent and know how to visualize things.
Rivas's stand, however, is in contrast with that of Lipa Archbishop Arguelles who earlier asked Movie Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) chief Marissa Laguardia to suspend the showing of the The Da Vinci Code in movie houses in the country.
Even Malacañang Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita asked the film to be banned as it might confuse Catholic Christians about their faith.
Laguardia, however, appealed to all anti-Da Vinci Code not to judge the movie in the first hand, as they are yet to review the content of the movie to determine its merit.
However, this did not put down the spirits of movie houses in Bacolod as they will be showing the movie on May 17.
Robinson's Place and Gaisano City Mall are just waiting for the signal from MTRCB. (EASD)
