JVC badminton Bacolod leg kicks off Tuesday By Henry C. Villalva
THE fourth leg of the 2nd JVC Badminton Regional Circuit kicks off on May 16 with opening ceremonies scheduled at 9 a.m. at the Po Hang Badminton Center in Bacolod City.
Another banner field are expected to see action vying not only for medals and cash prizes but also more importantly for berths in the JVC Open Badminton Championship in Manila in July.
Among those invited to grace Tuesday's opening ceremonies are Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, councilors Al Victor Espino and Mark Louie dela Rosa as well as Bacolod Representative Monico O. Puentevella, according to Michael Po of Pohang Badminton Center.
Also expected to arrive for Tuesday's opening from Manila are JVC Philippines Inc. President and CEO Hideyuki Takato and General Manager Kazue Salud.
Events lined up in this series scheduled May 16 to 19 are the elite division men's and ladies singles, doubles and mixed doubles; the juniors 16-Under boy's and girl's singles, doubles and mixed doubles as well as the collegiate men's and women's competitions.
Four collegiate teams have so far signed up for the competition - Riverside College, University of St. La Salle, Iloilo Doctor's College and another squad from Roxas City, Capiz.
"It's a pity not too many of our schools in Bacolod are into badminton yet. Last year we had three entries and they also finished in the top three," Po said.
Registration is for free for collegiate entries while for the other divisions the registration fee is pegged at P100 for single entry event and P150 for those seeing action in two or three events.
The staging this year's JVC regional finals is inspired by the success of its inaugural staging in the provinces.
The kickoff leg was held in Cebu last April 3 to 7 at Holiday Spa while Pampanga hosted the second leg at the Excel Badminton Center last April 17 to 21 and Davao City hosted the third leg at the Wheels 'N More Badminton Club last May 1 to 5.
