NABA hoping gym to reopen upon resolution of Paglaum ownership
THE Negros Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) headed by former Bacolod City councilor Juan Ramon "Monju" Guanzon is hoping that their boxing gym located at the ground floor of the renovated Paglaum Sports Complex will be reopened once the issue on who will manage the sports facility is finally resolved.
"We hope that our gym will finally be opened so that the young amateur boxers we are training will be able to continue practicing under the supervision of our coaches and trainers," Guanzon said.
The NABA gym, which has produced the likes of RP team bantamweight champion and 23rd Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Joan Tipon of Talisay City, was allegedly padlocked several months ago upon the orders of the principal of the Negros Occidental High School and has remained closed until now despite several appeals for its reopening made by NABA officials.
NABA treasurer Vic Tan said they are not involved in the squabble as to who should run Paglaum.
"We have never taken sides in the problem about who owns Paglaum, which agency should manage and supervise it or what its name should be. We are only interested in the opening of our gym so that we can continue training young boxers whom we envision will be among our country's future international, maybe Olympic champions. So why should they padlock our gym while they are still debating on the management of Paglaum? There's nothing wrong if they allow us to continue training our young boxers while they are still trying to decide matters." Tan said.
"The point is they have disrupted our training program and it's the young boxers who are affected," Tan reiterated.
"I wish to appeal once again to whoever is in charge of Paglaum at present to please open our NABA gym and just allow our coaches to resume the training of our young boxers. I hope these people will not remain unreasonable," Guanzon said.
NABA was granted the right to operate their boxing gym at the Paglaum in 1992 when the association executed a memorandum of agreement with the provincial government under former Governor Rafael Coscolluela. (HCV)
