Pedreña topscores but Singcang-Airport loses
THE 2005 Monico Cup MVP Nonilon Pedreña finished with the usual game-high 26 points but only tallied three in the final quarter allowing otherwise unheralded Barangay 25/26 to post an upset 77-70 victory in the ongoing 26-Under hostilities of the 4th Monico Cup Inter-Barangay Summer Basketball Tournament, Wednesday at the Barangay 35 gym.
And with the usually all-around Pedreña not in his usual elements, Barangay 25/26, mentored by Rino Delearna, leaned on the athletic and hard-working White delos Santos to lead his squad with his team-high 25 points and eight rebounds even as Mark dela Torre chipped in with 17 and Jason Orario with another 11 points for the well-deserved victory in Bracket A.
More importantly, Barangay 25/26 has grabbed the lead in the team standings in Bracket A with four wins and no loss while Barangay Singcang-Airport has dropped to second place with its 4-1 win-loss slate.
But Barangay 25/26 needs to post a win over also on-the-hunt Barangay Felisa when they clash on Sunday at the Barangay Granada gym in order to avoid complications going into the semi-finals with only three more playing dates left in the elimination round.
In other matches last Wednesday, Barangay Mandalagan made it two-in-a-row by posting an 86-71 win over Barangay Montevista to further strengthen its hold of the top slot in Bracket D with its 4-1 win-loss tally.
Coach Jose Falcis's squad got double-digit from August Palmares with 18, Elvie Rasmo with 13, Jay Magbanua with 11 and 10 from the hard-working Stefen Barneso. Montevista was led by Leo Palma with 21 points while Teodoro Lara chipped in with 13 in their losing effort.
In other games, Barangay Estefania edged Barangay Cabug, 60-53 drawing a game-high 21 points from Rojie Gelasan while guard RJ Pe¤as put in another 10 points and 6 assists for the win. Cabug drew double-digit performances from Roderick Jereza with 14 points, Janie Relota with 12 and Jesmar Iwarata with 11.
Mandalagan likewise needs to beat Barangay 10 on Sunday to assure itself of one of two semis slots in Bracket D.
Meanwhile, 19-Under hostilities resume Saturday at the Barangay 35 gym starting 8 a.m. with Mandalagan taking on Punta Taytay, Cabug versus Barangay 14, Barangay 2 against Pueblo Rosario/Eroreco and Pahanocoy against Montevista. (HCV)
