By Roberto L. Bacasong

SILAY CITY -- Residents in Sitio Bungol, Barangay Balaring in this city were surprised when a python, locally known as "magkal", appeared in their place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Steve Lira, a resident of the village, told Sun.Star that the snake could have come from somewhere near their area and was possibly wafted to the shore near their village due to the bad weather.

Lira, a fisherman, said he was assisted by Danilo Dumlao Jr. and four other persons in catching the snake from the water.

He said the snake measures more than two meters.

Lira said it the first time that they caught a python in their village though they have recovered several sea turtles before.

Meanwhile, Barangay chieftain Victor Diamante advised the residents not to kill the snake rather it should be put in a cage where it cannot put the villagers' lives in danger.

Executive Assistant Ed dela Fuente said Silay City Carlo Gamban and Vice Mayor Francis Joseph Jalandoni advised him to contact City Veterinarian Enrique Barcelona.

Barcelona, on the other hand, was in Manila so Dela Fuente contacted the North Negros Forest Reserve officers so the snake can be disposed.

Lira said they've turned over the snake at Silay City Hall yesterday afternoon of the same day. It was brought Sunday in Barangay Patag for proper disposition.
