Mansilingan, Bata book semi-final berths

BARANGAYS Mansilingan and Bata prevailed over their respective opponents Tuesday to book the last two semi-final slots in the 19-UNder category of the 4th Monico Cup Inter-Barangay Summer Basketball Tournament held at the Barangay Villamonte covered court.

Mansilingan, mentored by former PBA campaigner Genesis Sasuman, edged Barangay Granada, 82-79, to arrange a semi-final clash with early qualifier Barangay Pahanocoy.

Five Mansilingan cagers starred in the nail-biting win led by Amando Aplaon who finished with 14 points, Jade Calma with 13, Kimberly Lecerio with 10 and John Guara and Teddy Azucena with nine a piece.

Jay Pili tallied a game-high 21 points for 2005 losing finalist Granada while Meljun Dioteles chipped in with 14, Zamil Tangeo and Cliffin Guilaran with 12 baskets each and Carlos Robles with eight in their team;s losing quarterfinal effort.

Barangay Bata, the losing finalist of the 2nd Monico Cup, drubbed a hard-fighting Barangay Mandalagan side, 106-94, with point guard Kenneth Decolongon finishing with a team-high 33 points and eight assists while Mark Lumawag took the cudgels for the foul-riddled Joemel Paderog as he took over scoring starting in the third period finishing with 28 points mostly on penetrations.

St. Jovert Morante added 15, Joshua Cajeben with nine and Luigi Ohoylan with 12 for the well-deserved victory.

Mandalagan was led by Brian Brion's game-high 34 points while Javin Jacob chipped in with 21, Rollen Bijo with 13 and John Mark Galvez with 11 points.

The 19-UNder semi-final matches will kick off on June 3 at the Bacolod Arts Youth and Sports Center with Mansilingan taking on Pahanocoy and defending champion Barangay Tangub tangling against Bata.

Meanwhile, 26-UNder quarterfinal matches will resume on Thursday starting 4 p.m. at the Villamonte venue with two scheduled matches, according to tournament manager Ferdinand Odango.
