Roast pig fest to boost Silay tourism

SILAY CITY -- Mayor Carlo Gamban is hoping that the "lechon" (roasted pig) parade, which started last year, will help in boosting the city's tourism industry.

Gamban said in an interview that the parade of roasted pigs will add another tourist attraction for the city aside from its popular ancestral houses, which dates back to the Spanish era.

"I invited all the Silaynons to participate in the celebrations of the city," Gamban said.

He added that the parade of lechons started in 2005. It is held during the city's charter day, June 12, which coincides with the Philippine Independence Day.

"We will be having a bigger celebration next year because we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary," said Gamban.

"I want to improve the city's tourism industry and the parade of lechons will help us promote our campaign," he added.

The parade of lechons started at 9 a.m. from the city's gymnasium going to the public plaza.

"We want to make everyone happy," Silay First Lady Maridel Gamban said, adding that the party is open to all Negrenses. 130 lechons, rice, and juice were provided.

She further said that the activity is the brainchild of her husband and it aims to promote camaraderie not only among the Silaynons but among Negrenses also.
The 30-minute lechon parade was accompanied by a rondalla performance.

According to the information posted on www.silaycity.gov.ph, Silay is known for many things: good food, great art and culture. With its colorful history and people, it is easy to understand why Silay has so many tourist attractions -- both historical and natural.

Prime examples of the cultural and historical contribution of Silay to the Negrense Lifestyle are embodied in the Lifestyle Museums consisting of two ancestral homes of prominent Silay families: the Gastons and the Jalandonis.

Other tourist attractions in the area: the Horno Economico Sugar Mill Chimney; Old Silay Port; San Diego Pro-Cathedral; 31 Ancestral Houses; Natalio G. Velez Sports & Cultural Center; Dr. Jose C. Locsin Cultural & Civic Center; Cinco de Noviembre Marker; and, the World War II Shrine. (RLB)
