Himamaylan runners appear unbeatable By Henry C. Villalva
AFTER topping the initial two laps of the ongoing 2006 Negros Relay Marathon in record-breaking fashion it now appears inevitable that the Himamaylan team is well on the way of capturing the coveted title of this sports-tourism event.
The event is jointly organized by the Negros Occidental Track and Field Association (Notafa) headed by Roger Banzuela and the Negros Occidental Provincial Sports and Youth Development Office under Manuel De Oro.
With the win in the initial lap from Hinobaan to Kabankalan City last June 20, the Himamaylan runners mentored by Hernani Bolivar stretched their lead following their victory at the end of the second lap from Kabankalan City to Don Salvador Benedicto town last Wednesday, June 21.
Himamaylan negotiated the second lap covering a distance of 136.1 kilometers with a record time of 9 hours, 31 minutes and 54 seconds, which erased last year's lap record of 9:43.37 set by defending champion Bago City.
Going into yesterday's downhill third lap from Don Salvador Benedicto to Escalante City covering only 91.4 kilometers, the shortest lap in this four-lap competition, Himamaylan is way ahead with a total running time of 16 hours, 7 minutes and 41 seconds while Escalante City, which was second in the overall standings, had a time of 16:37.33. In third position overall was the Silay City Happi Team (16:50.53) and in fourth was Bago City (16:55.07).
"Our runners topped the two longest and more difficult laps so I feel that barring any unforeseen circumstances they should be able to top the remaining two laps which are shorter and easier because of the good roads," Himamaylan City first gentleman and team manager Oscar Bascon told Sun.Star Bacolod Thursday.
The runners are expected to be in Bacolod early afternoon today for the end of the final lap which will be at the Provincial Capitol lagoon grounds and where the champion team stands to receive a cash prize of P25,000 plus a trophy.
The second to fifth placing teams will be awarded trophies and cash prizes of P15,000, P10,000, P5,000 and P2,000 respectively, while the sixth to tenth placing teams will receive consolation prizes of P1,000 each.
The revived Run-Negros-Run event is an inter-LGU (local government unit) event which is being staged in cooperation with the Escalante City Sports Development Office, Office of the Governor and the Negros Association of Chief Executives (ACE).
