Bing 'pushing for deadline' on new City Hall By Christine Mae Pelayo-Dinglasan
"LET US put the interest of the city above everything else," appealed Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia to those who continue to oppose his plan to construct the new government center, primarily because of its location.
The mayor has chosen the five-hectare property owned by the Gonzaga family at Barangay Villamonte, scrapping his previous choice - the government-owned property in Taculing, which was met by opposition from the village officials and residents.
He had also by-passed the property offered by former councilor Monju Guanzon in Barangay Mansilingan.
Leonardia said the P140 million-worth Gonzaga property is a blessing to the city.
"Let us decide on this, should we push through (with it) or not? It is our moral obligation to put it in good use. Let us together look for a solution because if we disregard it, it would show that we throw away a huge property because of business and politics (interest)," said Leonardia.
He stressed that there is a deadline to consider for the construction of the new government center.
The construction should start by the end of December, he said.
Leonardia further said that there is no problem with the physical set-up of the donated property.
"Let us put this to rest. It is clear that it is the best location and there is no problem with the cost of development," said Leonardia.
The mayor earlier said he had chosen the Gonzaga property because it was only donated by the Angela Estate, which is presently managed by the heirs of the late Don Fernando and Doņa Angela Gonzaga.
The new government center will serve as a one-stop-shop for Bacole¤os except for the Mayor's Office that will remain at the existing City Hall at the downtown area.
