Himamaylan runners top seeds in Milo marathon eliminations
By Henry C. Villalva

MARATHON runners carrying the colors of Himamaylan City are once more considered as the top seeds going into the July 23 Bacolod elimination leg of the 2006 National Milo Marathon.

Event organizers disclosed this to Sun.Star Tuesday.

"This is based on the result of the 2006 Negros Relay Marathon held from June 20-23 which the Himamaylanons dominated convincingly breaking all four existing lap records," an insider at the Negros Occidental Youth and Sports Development Office said.

Last Sunday, June 25, Himamaylan put seven of its runners in the Top 10 of the Escalante City 37-kilometer individual challenge with 24-year old Eric Panique topping the event for the fourth consecutive year with a time of 2:19.17.

The other Himamaylan runners who made it to the Top 10 were 3rd placer Rommen Hulleza (2:35.01); 4th placer Rowell Hulleza (2:26.13); 5th placer Raden Vergara (2:30.17); and 9th placer Anthony Babiera (2:41.24).

Finishing in second place behind Panique was Rene Desuyo of Cadiz City (2:22.26) who somehow made up for the absence of the Cadiz squad in the relay marathon event.

Bago City's Junel Apostol finished 6th with a time of 2:32 while Escalante City's Jessie Tupas placed 7th in 2:35.38 even as Jason Templa of Victorias City placed 8th (2:40.38) and veteran long distance runner Edilberto Cartagena posted a 2:41.28 time in finishing 10th.

Meanwhile, registration is now in full swing for the coming July 23 Milo marathon provincial eliminations at the University of St. La Salle varsity sports office of Negros Occidental Track and Field Association head Roger Banzuela.

Official entry forms are available on first-come-first-serve basis, according to co-organizer and former provincial sports officer Efren Timtiman.

Milo is encouraging schools and barangays to field runners in this year's edition of the prestigious running event.
