Army gives up 1,000 hectares for Kasla By Ma. Ester L. Espina
THE 3rd Infantry Division has given up a thousand hectares of their land within the military zone in Camp Jamindan, Capiz for planting Jatropha curcas or Kasla which is eyed as the Philippines' alternative source for fuel to soften the impact of rising fuel cost in the world market.
The Jatropha program has been embraced by almost all local government units in Western Visayas and has been adopted by the Regional Development Council in support of the national government's thrust.
A land survey has been done identifying the area in the military camp for planting of Kasla including establishing a nursery for seedlings which will be distributed to other LGUs who will be interested to establish their own plantations.
Presidential Adviser for Western Visayas Rafael Coscolluela welcomed the news saying there have been areas like Cauayan in Negros Occidental, which has started the Kasla project.
He enjoined other chief executives to identify idle public lands for Kasla planting including encouraging private landowners as well to venture into the project.
Coscolluela said that military reserves and government lands are first on the list of the national government as it is easier to implement the program there but in order to expand the program, local government units should prioritize the project.
