DepEd to probe teacher in mashing incident
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

THE Department of Education (DepEd) in Negros Occidental vowed a fair probe on the `mashing' incident at the EB Magalona Elementary School involving a female schoolteacher and her Grade IV male student Tuesday last week.

Dr. Eva Belicina, Schools Superintendent for Negros Occidental, said that she will call the attention of Raul Dinaga, district supervisor in E.B. Magalona, to report the incident to her as soon as possible despite of the fact that the one involved was Dinaga's wife, Rosario.

"As soon as Mr. Dinaga submits his report to me, I will forward it to our Legal Division for proper investigation and handling. In a week's time, probably we could have the result as well as the recommendation on the matter," Belicina vowed.

For now, however, she clarified that she cannot as yet details on the incident as she has yet to receive the report regarding the incident.

"What I am certain of is that teachers are not allowed to impose corporal punishment on their students," she said.

Dinaga was accused by Racquel Mondragon whose 10-year-old son (name withheld by Sun.Star Bacolod) suffered minor cuts from his right jaw extending to his mouth after the former allegedly mashed the boy's mouth.

Mondragon is mulling to bring the case before the Commission on Human Rights and to Belicina's attention.

Belicina said that she will handle the case with fairness.

Angeles Poniado-Verdeprado, the school principal, on the other hand, vowed to settle the mess at her level.

She is also amenable to Mondragon's proposal of transferring her son to another section for the child's sake.
