Guv hopes for the best on GMA's Sona

AS PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is set to deliver her State of the Nation Address (Sona) on July 24, Negros Occidental Governor Joseph Marañon hoped that all that she will promise will be implemented sooner in order to alleviate the poor living condition of the common tao.

The people will appreciate the Sona if they see and feel tangible results from it, Marañon added.

This as he stressed that the implementation of projects is more important than rhetorics.

Meanwhile, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) justified the deployment of 13,000 soldiers and policemen to secure GMA's Sona.

AFP spokesman Jose Angel Hondrado said the leadership of AFP and the PNP do not want to be caught flat-footed just in case the mutinous Magdalo Group pursues its plan.

He said the arrest of six Magdalo officers from a rented apartment in Fairview, Quezon City last July 7 greatly affected the plan that includes the occupation of the Batasan Complex and holding hostage legislators.

Asked why the AFP and the PNP are deploying 13,000 soldiers and policemen within and outside the Batasan Complex when the plot is already neutralized, Hondrado said, "This is aimed at ensuring the event would be peaceful."

This as various anti-government groups are expected to mount protest rallies during the President's Sona.

Last year, only about 5,000 policemen and soldiers were deployed in the same event.(DBD with reports from Sunnex)
