Chan shines but FEU falls to UE caging
HE SCORED, defended well against University of the East's top gunners and he rebounded, too. In fact Bacoleño Jeffrey Chan scored the crucial basket midway in the second for a 35-21 Far Eastern University lead.
But despite his heroics, his team, defending champion FEU Tamaraws, lost to the University of the East Red Warriors, 84-92, in overtime, Saturday, in the ongoing men's basketball competition of the 69th University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
In a telephone interview yesterday, former West negros College Mustang guard Junblargs Alisbo told Sun Star Bacolod "it was again the vaunted trio or ABC of Marcy Arellano, Mark Borboran and Bonbon Custudio who worked wonders for UE."
He said Arellano, who was struggling all day, drained a trey to stop an FEU run in the final minute of the extension and iced the game by sinking two free throws.
Borboran, who fouled out late in the overtime frame, opened fire in the extra period with a three-point play and a short stab to give coach Dindo Pumaren's charges an 84-79 lead.
Then, Custodio, who scored all of his 18 points after halftime, chipped in with a three-pointer of his own on their next possession to make it 87-79.
"It was one of those games where you play so-so and the opponent plays good and makes use of all the breaks and there's simply nothing you can do about it," Alisbo explained.
Meanwhile, Negrense James Yap, the newly crowned PBA MVP who is himself a former UE stalwart himself, said yesterday he is happy for his team in the UAAP. "I like what they did in winning against FEU and I see a very bright prospect for the team in this season of the UAAP," the Escalante City, Negros Occidental native told Sun Star Bacolod in a phone interview.
FEU's Chan is a former high school varsity standout of the University of St. La Salle. (HCV)
