Himamaylan runners top Milo Marathon 2006 Provincial race By Henry C. Villalva
TEAM Himamaylan failed to put its top runner -- Eric Panique -- on top of the top ten standings but it still has more than enough reasons to be happy since the winner of the centerpiece 21-kilometer category in Sunday's 2006 National Milo Marathon Negros Occidental provincial qualifying race is still from Himamaylan City.
Julius Sermona, 27, of Barangay Licacao, Himamaylan City, who has been a member of the national training pool for the last five years and is currently training in Baguio City for the forthcoming 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar topped yesterday's men's division of the 21-K race with Panique finishing second.
Cadiz bet Rene Desuyo finished third while other Himamaylan entries landed in the top ten -- Michael Empres (5th); Anthony Babiera (7th) and Raden Vergara (10th).
Himamaylan City bets likewise led the way in the other categories of Sunday's Milo provincial qualifying race with West Negros education junior Allan John Sitchon topping the boy's division of the 5-kilometer race and four others finishing in the top ten -- Rowell Hulleza (3rd); Rommel Hulleza (6th); Darius Roquero, Jr. (7th) and Von Ryan Quesada (8th).
Himamaylan bets also posted a 1-2 finish in the women's division of the 21k race through Irene Apuhin who breasted the tape first followed by her teammate Cherry Vee Bautista.
Negros Occidental Governor Joseph G. Marañon led officials and organizers in giving out the awards to top finishers of Sunday's competition at the provincial capitol lagoon.
Meanwhile, Herlyn Hilado finished fourth as the lone Himamaylan entry to land a top ten berth in the 5K girls division.
Sermona, who specializes in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters in the national training pool of the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association, pocketed the P5,000 champion's cash prize and trophy while Panique settled for P3,000 plus trophy and Desuyo P3,000 plus trophy.
Himamaylan City first gentleman and Negros Basketball Association (NBA) president Oscar "Dodong" Bascon who acts as team manager of the Himamaylan City team once again credited "the year-long training of the runners and the partnership of head coach Hernani Bolivar and trainer Rodolfo Rizalde as the key to the success of the Himamaylan runners' victory."
For his part, Bolivar thanked Himamaylan City Mayor Carminia G. Bascon "for the City Government's support in the year-round training of the team."
