Montoyo downs Panes for 4th straight win

DEFENDING champion and candidate master Ted Ian Montoyo posted his fourth consecutive victory to strengthen his position as tournament leader last Saturday by defeating Francis Glen Panes in 36 moves of a Queen's Gambit.

Accepted as fourth round hostilities in the 7th Negrense Professional (Degree Holder) Individual Chess Tournament got staged at the drive-in restaurant of the New Top's Millennium Plaza Bowling Lanes.

Draws were fashioned between Candidate master Nunilon Fulo III and Christopher Salao; Ernie Abanco and Jomar Funoan; Ronald Aposaga and Gomer Vivero; and Rey Fuentes and Engr. Eden Descalsota.

Montoyo, a disbursing officer at the Sum-ag National High School, grabbed solo lead in the third round after sharing the same with four others in the first two rounds of the 7-round Swiss System (1 hour 20 moves + 1 hour to finish the game) tournament organized and sponsored by The Royal Game Aficionados of Negros, Inc. headed by Dr. Alfonso Teorima.

The tournament is envisioned to produce more Negrense national masters and candidate masters from among chess enthusiasts who are professionals and holders of a four-year college degree, according to tournament director and chief arbiter Lorenzo "Dodz" Felisilda.

Montoyo posted a total of 6 points in winning last year's edition of this annual competition. Finishing behind Montoyo was Ian Cris Henry Udani with 5.5 points. Second runner-up was CM Alfred Acaling, Jr.; Francis Glen Panes (third runner-up); Xavier John Verdun (fourth runner-up) and National Master Alan Severino (fifth runner-up).

Among last year's top six finishers, Udani and Severino are not seeing action in the ongoing competition. (HCV)
