DepEd execs divided on plan to move opening of classes By Danny B. Dangcalan
SAGAY CITY -- Officials of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Western Visayas collided with each other in terms of opinions on the plans of moving the opening of classes from June to September.
DepEd Assistant Regional Director Elnora Barrios, who was here Thursday for the launching of the Library Hub, said if the reason for change is due to weather, June being a rainy season, this is not still suitable in the whole country since we have different climates in each region.
If it is for financial concerns, citing October as the milling season of sugar in Negros, this may not be applicable to the other provinces, which have different crop products and therefore have different harvest season, she added.
In fact, said Barrios the plan has been already tried before during the time of then Secretary Alejandro Roces and was proven ineffective.
But according to Barrios, the plan has the support of Senate President Manny Villar, who recently sponsored the bill in Senate.
Sagay City Schools Division Superintendent Mildred Garay, however, said she is in favor of the plan, as far as Negros is concerned, stating that because June is a rainy month and there are more absences recorded during this month.
Rainy season is also dangerous for the children to go to school, Garay pointed out.
Lavender Hipolito, Education Supervisor I of Sagay City Division also said that September is a better choice for the opening of classes every year since parents can afford more to buy their children's school supplies because it's already milling season in Negros.
But for Sagay City Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva change on the opening of classes will have no significant impact in Negros.
It will only be felt by the Manila schools whose students usually suffer from floods during rainy seasons.
