WNC, USLS too hot in opening day opponents By Henry C. Villalva
THE West Negros College and the University of St. La Salle set the tone for another exciting finish in this year's Negros Occidental Football Association (Nofa) as they prevailed during Saturday's opening at the Paglaum Sports Complex pitch.
WNC, the defending provincial champion and top seed in this qualifying event, started against a hard-fighting University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos side, allowing the Carlo Torbela mentored UNOR squad to make several incursions into their goal area before Lemuel Unabia broke the ice with a well-struck looper from the left corner of the goal line in the 15th minute.
The Wesnecans, who were handled by assistant coach James Asperga in the absence of head coach Norman Fegidero, Jr., also scored in the 65th minute through a penalty kick by midfielder Mark Ferrer and in stoppage time (90th) through Alexander Alonsagay.
WNC, which finished third in last year's PFF Adidas Cup National Under-19 Finals behind champion Davao and runner-up Iloilo in that competition held in Bago City, is currently bannered by Keith Miravalles, Francisco Donieza, Rodolf Bebangco, Carmelo Tacusalme, Jaypee Villaluz, Mark Ferrer, Erose Ca-aya, Vince Braga, Alvin Espinosa, Rodelito manalo, Lemuel Unabia, Jonard Bentic, Alexander Alonsagay, Paul Concepcion, Jerik Salazar, Carlos Sibug Reola, Erwin Guitche and Michael Orbino.
Four squads are entered in Division I of the U19 competition--WNC, USLS, UNO-R and Bago City FC.
In Saturday's other Division I matchup, University of St. La Salle demolished a game Bago City FC side, 8-0, with goals by Jerome Combate (18th and 45th); Gerald Pacquiao (37th and 68th); Valeriano Gayares (51st); Jaedon Rae Lobaton (56th and 63rd) and Eddie Ecraela (73rd).
Meanwhile, in the U19 Division II hostilities, which kicked off last Saturday morning at the USLS pitch, host University of St. La Salle-Integrated School nipped tournament newcomer Handumanan United FC, 5-4, while Pontevedra FC upset pre-match favorite Celta de Victorias, 4-3. Eight teams are seeing action in the U19 Division II competition.
In the centerpiece men's open contest, defending champion and pre-tournament favorite University of St. La Salle displayed it's awesome form in defeating University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, 4-0, in yesterday's lone Division I encounter at the Paglaum pitch.
La Salle, mentored by former RP team coach Freddie Lazarito, controlled the match all throughout and scored through Floriano Pacilan in the 11th and 71st minutes; Arnie Pasinabo in the 48th minute and Ruben Doctora, Jr., in the 83rd minute for the win.
