Sipalay tourism program wins another award By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan
ILOILO CITY -- After winning a tourism award early this year, Sipalay City is at it again as it Thursday won the second place in the entire Western Visayas for its Development of Tourism Industry Program.
The award, the first-ever in the region, was for the Best Public Sector Projects (City Category) for the fiscal year 2005-2006.
The said program is one of Mayor Oscar Montilla's major thrusts aimed at promoting Sipalay as the "Next Tourism Haven" in the south and second to Boracay island in Malay, Aklan.
Roxas City's "Establishment of Diwal Sanctuaries thru Transplantation in Roxas Waters" in the Province of Capiz, on the other hand, was adjudged first place.
For the Provincial Category, Capiz's Drug Management Program" also won first place with Antique's "Country Program for Children" as second placer.
But for Sipalay Mayor Oscar Montilla, Jr. winning the second place in this search that was participated by more than 300 local government units in the region is a great honor for their city and people.
Last March, Sipalay City also won a national award, "Hiyas ng Turismo" for its undiscovered tourist destinations.
This as Sipalay, dubbed as the "Jewel of Sugarlandia" is now known for its hidden treasures that include white sand beaches, caves, underwater wonders, mine view, among others.
With this Montilla said that they've already started educating their people on the importance of the tourism industry being one of the pillars now of their economy.
As a result, Montilla noted a prevalent increase in tourist arrivals in their city that also generated a lot of employment opportunities to their local residents.
Meanwhile, the cities of Silay, Sagay, Himamaylan, Bacolod and La Carlota were named finalists in the said contest.
Silay was cited for its "Free School Bus Service and Rain Coats Project" for all students in the upland barangays.
Sagay's "Urban Resettlement Project and Housing Site for Government Employees" and Himamaylan's Relocation and Housing Project" also got the judges nod La Carlota and Kabankalan's "High Value Crops Program," and High Value Vegetables Program," respectively were also included among the 15 finalists along with Bacolod's Indigenous Supplementary Mixture (INSUMIX) Feeding Program.
While Cauayan's "Establishment of Garment Center" through the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) was also included in the finalists in the National Line Agency Category which was won by Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR's) "Operation Dikit and Tax Mapping or Tax Compliance Verification Drive" and Department of Health (DOH's) National Tuberculosis Control Program."
Kabankalan's Negros State College of Agriculture's "Food-Always-In-The Home (FAITH) Garden Program," on the other hand, also won second place in the State College and University Category next to first placer University of the Philippine-Visayas'"Development of UP-Visayas Health Services Program in Miag-ao, Iloilo."
Meanwhile, the search that gave all first and second placer winners received P40,000 and P20,000 cash prizes, respectively was also sponsored by the National Economic and Development Authority and Regional Development Council, both in Western Visayas and in cooperation with German Technical Cooperation-Decentralization Program (GTC-DP).
