2 ex-Stingers now coach Vietnamese national teams By Henry C. Villalva
TWO former varsity cage standouts of the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City, who were also standouts of the Negros Basketball Association (NBA), are now the national basketball team coaches in the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
The two former USLS Stingers are Ricky Magallanes of Barangay Tangub and Dax Castellano of Mountainview Subdivision, Barangay Mandalagan, Bacolod City.
This was confirmed to Sun.Star Bacolod yesterday by Agustin Ernesto "Tinto" Bascon, son of Negros Basketball Association (NBA) president Oscar "Dodong" Bascon and a former La Salle Bacolod varsitarian himself.
Magallanes and Castellano were both standouts of the Stingers under former USLS head coach Ricky Dandan.
Before his Vietnam coaching stint, Magallanes served as assistant coach of the Spring Cooking Oil squad in the National Basketball Conference (NBC) while Castellano mentored the La Salle Greenhills high school varsity team before he followed Magallanes to Vietnam where he is now coaching the women's national team while Magallanes mentors the men's team.
During his last visit to Bacolod, Magallanes dropped by Bascon Hotel to pay a visit to the NBA head.
Magallanes, who played both the two-guard and point guard positions during his varsity years at University of St. La Salle, was able to establish links with the Vietnam basketball community during the frequent overseas stints of the Spring Cooking Oil squad who had joined several regional cage tournaments representing the Philippines.
