Top Negros cagers compete in TeleTech 3-on-3 tourney By Henry C. Villalva
TOP varsitarian, ex-collegiate standouts as well as three former MVPs and two reigning MVPs of the annual Monico Cup Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament are among those reportedly seeing action for the different teams who will compete in the TeleTech 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
The tournament is slated on Saturday, August 5, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the University of St. La Salle-Integrated School covered court.
This was learned yesterday from Negros Basketball Association (NBA) president Oscar "Dodong" Bascon and director Jojo Dazo who are helping coordinate the event in Bacolod City.
Former Monico Cup 19-Under MVPs Ely Olarte, Vengie Vergara and Alfie Villariza are suiting up for different teams while reigning Monico Cup 26-Under MVP Briton Javelona and 19-Under MVP Joemel Paderog are reportedly combining efforts with Barangay Tangub standout Villariza.
Olarte, who played for Barangay Estefania when he won his 19-Under Monico Cup MVP, is playing alongside West Negros College Mustangs teammates Vergara (also from Estefania), Donald Quilantang and Robert Buñol for WNC Team 2 while the WNC Team 1 is composed of Basil Stanley Tizon, Joel Deocadiz, Bernard Suante and Jason Millarin.
WNC Team 3 has Geban Espiritu, Virgilio Dapr, Jetric Sumido and Jerald Bacillote.
The University of St. La Salle Stingers are fielding another three team with the UNO-R Rams and CSA-B Eagles expected to field one team each.
A reliable source told Sun Star Bacolod yesterday the Eagles will be represented by Antonio dela Peña, Joemel Garrido, Christian Antiporda and either Edcil Ray Quizan or Erwilson Santos.
TeleTech Titans, the Philippine Basketball League's (PBL) "youngest and fastest-rising" team is using the event to scout for prospective local talents as well as to conduct on-site recruitment.
