Editorial: Bing's loyalist

BACOLOD City Police Director Pedro Merced declared over the weekend that he is a loyalist of Mayor Evelio Leonardia who appointed him to office last year.

Although the director's statement can be taken as a statement simply made to save one's skin, it can also be taken as an assurance that the incumbent official will be getting all the police support in next year's elections.

What will then happen to those who will also be running in the mayoral race? Will they be left with the barangay tanods to take care of their security needs now that Merced has issued his statement of support to a politician?

Police work goes beyond politics and the appointing authority. Prudence could have gotten the better part of the city's police chief.

Now that he has made his declaration of loyalty to Mayor Leonardia, can the people, who are paying the salaries and benefits of Merced, and the Police force, to which he belongs, still expect loyalty from him?

Police guards

Police Officer Fleve Jun Composa was reported over the weekend to have escorted a businessman to a ceremony in Iloilo City last week.

And suddenly Composa no longer belongs to any Police unit in Negros Occidental.

The Negros Occidental Police Office, the Regional Mobile Group and the Bacolod City Police Office directors all claimed that Composa does not belong to their unit.

Perhaps Composa belonged to a security agency, one that is charged to secure the lives and properties of businessmen.

If that is the case, Composa should not be wearing a policeman's uniform. Otherwise, he will only be disgracing an organization that is still trying to win peoples' hearts sympathies.
