Dog show for oil spill victims

IN AN EFFORT to contribute something for the good of the oil spill victims in Guimaras, the Iloilo Kennel Club, through its president Jhong Grabato, is holding a Fun Match on September 10 at the Robinsons Place Iloilo.

The activity using "lovable pet dogs" will do a fashion show. The dogs will be clad in beautiful and artistic costumes and will be allowed to showcase various tricks.

Grabato said this is "a sort of fund-raising" for the benefit of Guimarasnons.
The registration fee is only P100. The show will start at 10:30 a.m.

This as Negros Occidental Governor Joseph Marañon is demanding that Petron Corporation lay down the timetable for the salvaging of m/t solar 1, as almost a month has passed with no clear-cut statement from the company on when to re-float the vessel.

Marañon on Friday maintained his unconditional petition to Petron to pull the sunken tanker off the waters of Guimaras "if we are to sleep sound in the night following the oil spill nightmare."

The sunken Solar 1 sank off the coast of Guimaras strait on August 11. It was carrying at least 2 million liters of bunker fuel.

Japanese underwater surveillance vessel Shinsei Maru last week found the vessel to be in upright position in the seabed but has also been continuously leaking bunker oil.

Marañon has a standing instruction to all 23 threatened coastal towns and cities of the province to be on alert 24-hours everyday, adding that vigilance among the people is important so as not to be caught unaware in the event the spillage hit the Negros Occidental coastal areas.

Petron Vice President Joey Campos also reportedly told Marañon to contact him directly on any concern regarding the oil spill problem as a way of assuring him of the company's continued effort to contain the spillage.

Marañon said as far as Negros is concerned, the mulling of legal charges against Petron is not a priority at the moment as no damage has yet been made by the oil spill in the island's marine resources.

He however said the Provincial Government is willing to give any legal assistance to Guimaras should Governor JC Rahman Nava ask for his help.
In Silay City, thin oil sheen 50 meters wide and 1.5 kilometers in length was seen at approximately four kilometers from its gulf coastline.
Erwin Butanas, deputized coordinator of the city's Office of the Civil Defense, made the confirmation.

The Negros Occidental Task Force Oil Spill Area coordinating center reported no oil spill sightings though in Valladolid and Pontevedra towns and Himamaylan City, which were earlier identified to be the most likely areas to be hit by the spillage given their proximity to Guimaras.
