'Hostage-taking' injures 3 nursing coeds
By Roberto L. Bacasong

THREE nursing students from Riverside College were injured when a "deranged" man robbed them while on board a public utility jeepney plying the Mandalagan-Libertad route Thursday evening.

Police identified the suspect as Jose Leo Panoncillo, of Purok Lubi, Barangay 3, Bacolod City.

The victims who were all minors (name withheld by Sun.Star Bacolod) told the Police that Panoncillo threatened them without provocation including the other jeepney passengers.

Investigator PO3 Julius Lagon said the 29-year-old Panoncillo reportedly boxed one of the passengers, causing fear to a 16-year-old girl who jumped off the running vehicle.

Lagon added that the victim sustained head injuries and was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital.

The other 17-year-old victim was threatened by Panoncillo using an improvised bladed weapon.

Lagon said the suspect took the victim's bracelet and necklace.

After the jeep came to a stop, bystanders ganged up on Panoncillo and started mauling him. He sustained multiple injuries.

He was arrested along South Capitol road corner Lacson St. at about 11 p.m. Thursday.

Lagon said complaints for grave threats, physical injuries and robbery will be filed against Panoncillo who is detained at Police Station 2.
