City Council holds Petron accountable

THE Bacolod City Council has unanimously approved a resolution demanding from the National Government to hold Petron accountable for the immediate recovery, salvaging or retrieval of Solar I from the bottom of the Visayan Sea.

It also demanded the removal of the 2 million liters banker fuel in the ship during their last session.

The council believes that the National Government must immediately respond to the pleas of the local government units (LGUa) whose marine reserves or sanctuaries are threatened by the oil spill disaster.

It stressed that millions or thousands of people in the Visayas depend on the sea for their livelihood and sustenance.

Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia earlier created "Task Force Bantay Langis" to tightly guard the movement of oil spill and to ensure the welfare and safety of the people.

Leonardia said the City has to be prepared to combat the potential threat by controlling the oil spill outside the area of responsibility of Bacolod, providing an early warning to shoreline barangays, containing and retrieving the oil before it hits the coastline through bayanihan (united) effort of all barangay concerned.

The City Government, together with the concerned private sectors, is also in close coordination with the fishermen and fisher folks of the affected barangays in Bacolod. (Press release)
