Nopsscea cage champion invited to compete in Champions League

SIXTEEN crack collegiate basketball squads from the different leagues in Metro Manila, Visayas and Mindanao, including the champion of this year's Negros Occidental Private Schools Sport Cultural and Educational Association competition will fight for this year's Collegiate Champions (CCL) title starting October 1.

The top four teams in the UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) and the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) will lead the roster of competing teams.

They will be joined by the champions from the National Athletic Association of State Colleges and Universities (NAASCU), National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) and Universities and Colleges Athletic Association (UCAA).

Two slots are available for the teams coming from the Visayas and Mindanao. Battling for the slots are the top four teams from Cebu's CSAFI league as well as the champion of both the Nopsscea and the Davao league or the DCAA.

Completing the cast are three wild card entries, which will be determined by the sports media representatives on the basis of their previous and current competitive performance.

Scholarship funding as well as sports equipment and facilities amounting to P850,000 are at stake in the two-week competition, according to an announcement from organizers in Manila Tuesday.

The champion school will receive P500,000 worth of scholarships and sports equipment, while the second, third and fourth placers will receive P200,000, P100,000 and P50,000 worth of prizes, respectively.

The West Negros College Mustangs who are gunning for an unprecedented eight Nopsscea title this year, have previously seen action in past stagings of the Champions League, a tournament which is the brainchild of former national coach and now UP Maroons mentor Joe Lipa.

Teams from the UAAP won the first three stagings of the event with the University of the East Red Warriors claiming the crown in the inaugural season while the FEU Tamaraws took the next two titles.(HCV)
