NBA meeting with ball clubs set Friday

NEGROS Basketball Association (NBA) head Oscar "Dodong" Bascon will meet with representatives of the different cage organizations and clubs in Bacolod City and the province Thursday to discuss the staging of a "Class B" tournament.

The meeting is set at 4 p.m. at the Casa Linda of Bascon Hotel and will be presided by NBA commissioner and former Bacolod City councilor Juan Ramon "Monju" Guanzon.

It is envisioned to unite the different existing ball clubs behind a common schedule of tournaments and other activities, which will prevent players from having problems with which tournament to join.

Representative Monico Puentevella (Lone District, Bacolod City) earlier suggested during the Basketball Summit to arrive at a common schedule and "help our players decide which tournament to join and in the process enable them not to discriminate against certain leagues including the NBA."

He also suggested that the gathering of the various basketball stakeholders in the province can agree among themselves on who will sit in the transitory board of the newly created Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP) as the Negros representative.

Puentevella is the vice-president of the Philippine Olympic committee (POC).

He earlier batted for the inclusion of a Negros and Iloilo representative in the SBP board.

Guanzon, who was tasked to oversee the conduct of the summit as committee chairman together with members Dexter Dy and Jojo Dazo, is also expected to pursue discussion regarding the so-called "banning" of players from seeing action in certain tournaments if they have seen action in NBA tournaments.

"We in the NBA look forward to a more fruitful and cooperative relationship with the different clubs and organizations in the province for the sake of a common cause which is basketball development and we believe tomorrow's meeting is a step in that direction," Bascon told Sun.Star Wednesday.
