Friday, October 06, 2006 WNC, USLS XIs to clash Saturday By Henry C. Villalva
THE odds are pretty much even when defending collegiate champion West Negros College takes on arch rival University of St. La Salle in Saturday's varsity football encounter of the ongoing Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural and Educational Association (Nopsscea) season, 3 p.m., at the Paglaum Sports Complex pitch.
Both squads will be seeing action minus their No. 1 keepers -- Archie Bayquin of USLS and Kenneth dolloso of WNC--both of whom already graduated.
La Salle will be parading rookie keeper Roan Datulayta while the Wesnecans will have Earl Tomodos.
Both WNC, mentored by former RP team standout Norman Fegidero, Jr. and USLS, coached by former RP team mentor Freddie Lazarito, are expected to rely on strong midfielders with Jayson Panhay manning the La Salle center and Robert Cañedo directing plays for the WNC side.
The Wesnecans will also lean on a strong defense line anchored on sweeper Joel Ballo-allo while La Salle will have the lanky William Valencia doing the job of defending the goal.
Meanwhile, USLS will enjoy slight advantage in the frontline with the prolific Floriano Pacilan still very much around and in his elements while the Wesnecans will have to hope rookies like Mark Ferrer and Vince Braga will step up for the kill.
Negros Occidental Football Association (Nofa) deputy general secretary Warren concepcion has been tapped to act as tournament manager for football this year and is expected to be backed up by Nofa technical men Dennis Estaniel, the Nofa referees committee chairman and Nofa match commissioner Joseph Gensaya, among others.
Concepcion is expected to tap the series of newly recommended FIFA referee Arnel Sagansay in officiating the Nopsscea collegiate matches before he leaves for his initial assignment outside the country. (HCV)
