Thursday, October 19, 2006 Over 250 enlist for Pohang Masskara badminton
OVER 250 players from various parts of the country are seeing action in the 2006 edition of the Pohang Masskara Badminton Invitational Tournament, which is scheduled to reel off Friday until Sunday, at the Pohang Badminton Center along Pablo O. Torre Street, Bacolod City.
Tournament director Karl Michael po said he expects more players to sign up for the tournament before the matches kick off Friday.
Players from Manila, Cebu, Ormoc, Iloilo, Roxas, Dumaguete and Bacolod City will compete for top honors in the open doubles and mixed doubles as well as ladies and 14-Under categories. Also seeing action are Negrense participants representing clubs in Victorias, Cadiz, La Carlota, Bago, Silay and Talisay as well as Valadolid.
Bacolod age-group standout Nikki Therese Lim Servando, the 13-year-old champion from Trinity Christian School, is expected to lead Bacolod's age-group campaign in the 14-Under contest.
Servando, who recently became one of the youngest commercial endorser from outside Metro Manila when she was signed up by the Nature's Spring Mineral Water, teamed up with Mary Joy Fernandez to pocket the Palarong Pambansa elementary division doubles title during the last Palaro in Naga City. Since then, she has won the titles in both the age-group and open divisions in various tournaments here and in other parts of the country.
Also expected to show up for the host paddlers are Desiree Yanson and Rosalie Soberano who are expected to figure prominently in this three-day competition, part of the calendar of sports events in this year's Masskara celebration.
At stake in this tournament are clash prizes, trophies, and other giveaways.
This is only the second time in the history of the annual masskara festival that the event is included in the official program of activities, according to Po. Both Representative Monico O. Puentevella (lone district, Bacolod City) and Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia are expected to attend the formal opening ceremonies on Saturday.
