Six Negrenses in RP list for Asiad

AT LEAST six Negros Occidental athletes are included in the official roster of athletes for the Philippines in the forthcoming 15th Asian Games slated December 1-15 in Doha, Qatar.

The list was released by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).

The Negrense standouts are: Rhovyl Verayo of Pulupandan, Negros Occidental in beach volleyball; bantamweight Joan Tipon of Talisay City in boxing; judoka John Baylon of Binalbagan, Negros Occidental; Rey Grandea of Bacolod City in billiards; hammer throw specialist Arneil Ferrera of Cauayan, Negros Occidental; and Bacolod golfer Anya Tanpinco.

There were earlier reports from Manila saying that two Negrenses will be part of the men's rowing team but their names could not immediately be confirmed or verified.

Chances for Negros softball standouts to make it to the Asiad also did not materialize as lack of funds to finance the national softball squads were not available at the time of the submission deadline.

Meanwhile, 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games bantamweight gold medalist and Asian best boxer Joan Tipon of Talisay City posted his first victory in the Tammer Cup International Boxing Championship in Tanpere, Finland last Monday.

Tipon was a child prodigy of Negros Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) head Bacolod ex-councilor Juan Ramon 'Monju' Guanzon. He toyed with Israel's Piter Moyshenzon, 22-7, to advance to the second round.

Also posting a first round win was lightweight Genebere Basadre who beat local bet Joonas Kolvaranta, 22-7, while two other RP boxers were scheduled to see action later in this event participated by top amateurs from Europe, Asia and Africa.

Tipon likewise won a gold in his first stint in this annual tournament two years ago.(HCV)
