Unigames to become Ched Unigames next year By Henry Villalva
STARTING on the 12th edition of the National University Games next year, the annual gathering of the athletes from the different colleges and universities all over the country will be known as the Commission of Higher Education (Ched) National University Games.
This was announced by founding chairperson Bro. Rolando Dizon, FSC during the opening ceremonies of the 11th Unigames held last Monday evening at the
University of St. La Salle Coliseum.
Dizon later told Sun.Star in an interview that Ched OIC Freddie Bernal of the Office of Student Services was scheduled to come to Bacolod within the next two days to deliver a copy of the Ched Board resolution declaring that the Unigames will henceforth be the national sports competition for tertiary athletes.
Bernal was likewise scheduled to deliver to organizers of the ongoing competition's Ched's financial assistance of P200,000 for this year's Unigames.
Dizon had earlier sought for the assistance of Ched for its financial support for the Unigames and the Ched national board in its recent meeting approved a resolution pledging P2 million for Unigames start with the 2007 edition which might again be hosted here in Bacolod City by USLS and co-hosted by Riverside College.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Ricardo "Ritchie" Garcia of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) who was the keynote speaker during Monday's Unigames. "The PSC remains committed to support the UNIGAMES as long as we are in the commission," the Negrense commissioner said.
Dizon also said, organizers can expect a much bigger Unigames starting next year with the participation of state colleges and universities now that the annual gathering has become the official annual sports competition for tertiary athletes under Ched.
The ongoing Unigames, which is scheduled until October 29 is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, Ricky Razon Jr. and ICTSI, Terry Capistrano and TMS Services, CHED, Nike (official ball for basketball and football). Mikasa (official ball for volleyball), Mayor Carlo Gamban and the City of Silay, WG & A Superferry, Cebu Pacific, The City of Bacolod, Bredco, Mc Donald's Bacolod, Bascon Hotel, Merci Pasalubong Center, Sports in Focus, St. Benilde School, JRR Dizon Foundation, LASALTECH, Inc., Buglas Development Lending Corporation, Gosen and Nittaku.
