Tuesday, October 31, 2006 Gambling, liquor, weapons banned in cemeteries By Nicolas C. Delfin and Danny B. Dangcalan
NEGROS Occidental Police Provincial Office (Noppo) Director Rosendo Franco has prohibited the public from bringing alcoholic drinks inside the cemeteries and memorial parks.
He has also warned them against gambling like tong-its and mahjong inside these premises.
Franco said he has directed all “Oplan Kaluluwa” security forces to check and confiscate gambling materials and liquors.
This as Franco said most crimes are usually the results of alcohol intoxication and gambling.
“Pwede mag-program sa loob, pero wag lang magsugal kasi yan yung laging dahilan ng mga away-away,” he said in Tagalog.
He added that policemen detailed at every police assistance centers, which will be set up on the entrances of every cemetery and memorial park, will conduct frisking operations to check and confiscate deadly weapons.
Franco has also placed his men on a full alert status to protect and secure vital installations, including seaports, airports and bus terminals in the province.
“We have coordinated with different agencies to prevent any atrocities during the observance of All Saints’ and All Soul’s Day,” he said.
Franco added that although there is a 24-hour police visibility for two days, everyone should secure their houses before leaving so as to prevent incidents of robbery.
Meanwhile, Governor Joseph Marañon is calling for a peaceful, meaningful and prayerful celebration of our tradition in remembering our departed loved-ones.
Marañon also warned against certain groups which have been identified in the past whose sole intention is to create chaos during these celebrations.
