UNIVERSITY of Sto. Tomas dislodged pre-tournament favorite and defending titlist Far Eastern University in the final tally of the men’s athletics competition of the just concluded 11th National University Games (Unigames) at the Panaad Stadium.
UST actually prevailed after a tight contest for top overall honors in the men’s division after posting an 8-6-5, gold-silver-bronze medal tally while FEU settled for first runner-up honors with its 7-7-2 medal count at the end of competitions.
Finishing third in the men’s contest was Ateneo de Manila University with its 2-2-4, gold-silver-bronze medal haul while College of St. Benilde was in fourth place (1-1-2); Holy Cross of Davao College was fifth (1-0-1); University of the Cordilleras was sixth (1-0-0); University of the East was seventh (0-2-4); and De La Salle University was in eighth (0-1-0).
Host University of St. La Salle finished in ninth place with its 0-0-1 count.
FEU however retained the women’s athletics crown during the three-day competition with 13 golds, seven silvers and five bronzes. Coming in second was UST with 5-6-6- and UE with 1-4-6 was third.
Sharon Jizmundo led the way for the FEU women when she pocketed five golds capped by her anchor finish in both the classified and 4x400-meter relay teams’ victories.
UST’s campaign was spearheaded by Jun Rey Bano who took four golds in the 400 meters, 400-meter hurdles and in the two relay contests including a record-breaking performance in classified relay which established a new meet record of 1:58.70.
Meanwhile, John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation-Bacolod barged into the champions’ column when the women’s taekwondo team won the championship courtesy of finweight Pauline Crystal Reyes and featherweight Rubilyn Mapa who pocketed individual golds.
St. Louis University of Baguio finished second while Pampanga’s Angeles University Foundation was third.
University of the East dislodged defending men’s titlist FEU with three golds against two as Bacoleño Dustin Delarazzabal (flyweight), Jeffrey Figueroa(featherweight) and Brix Ramos (light/welter) clinched golds for the Red Warriors.
