Negrense netter Guba in ’06 PCA Open 3rd round

NEGROS Occidental tennis standout Yannick Guba of La Carlota City, seeded fifth, has reached the third round of the prestigious P400,000 Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open Tennis Championships at teh PCA indoor-shell courts.

Guba, a varsity standout at the De La Salle University in Manila who was named MVP of the recent University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s tennis competition for leading the DLSU squad to the championship, advanced after defeating Niño Salvador, 6-2, 6-4.

The former Palarong Pambansa champion and Scoop awardee of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (SCOOP) Bacolod Chapter, joined third seed Alexander Lazaro who defeated qualifier Jason Benitez, 6-2, 6-2, Monday to reach the third round.

Joining Lazaro and Guba in the next round were fourth seed Elbert Anasta, a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Karl Santamaria; No. 11 Jaime Solon who downed Roland Kraut, 6-3, 6-2; Michael Misa who rallied past Mario Sabas, 6-4, 6-7 (8), 6-4; Michael Tenoria who eliminated No. 16 Luisito Clores, 6-1, 7-5; and Ralph Kevin Barte who beat Ruel Rubillar, 6-4, 6-0.

Also advancing in this premier event calendared by the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) were Ricardo Lagac, who stamped his class over Gilbert Estrada, 6-1, 6-1; McLean Barraquias, a 6-0, 7-5 winner over Joseph Arcilla; and Chris Cuarto, who prevailed over Ronald Joven, 6-1, 6-3.

Ased about his chances to figure in the top four of this event presented by Dunlop and supported by PVL Restaurant-Little Lawrence, Hewlett Packard Corp., Phils., Eagle Point Resort and Burlington Socks, the former Negros Occidental Cultural and Sports Foundation (NOCSF) tennis scholar said, “This is a tough tournament with many of the country’s top players entered, but I’ll try my best and I hope to play better in the next few days,” Guba said in a phone interview.

Yannick is one of three tennis siblings of Socrates and Nimfa Guba of La Carlota City.
