Nikki Servando to lead oath of sportsmanship at WVRAA meet
By Henry C. Villalva

NEGROS Occidental badminton child prodigy Nikki Therese Lim Servado will be among the opening day stars of the 2007 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet on February 19, 2007 at the Panaad Sports Complex in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

Servando, a grade six pupil at Trinity Christian School and a former national age-group champion of the prestigious JVC Badminton Championships, will lead the traditional oath of sportsmanship for participating athletes coming from provinces of Guimaras, Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo and host Negros Occidental.

She recently hit the headlines when she came home from the 2007 Mayor Jerry Treñas Cup Dinagyang Badminton Championships with four gold medals. She won in the 12-Under and 16-Under girls singles as well as in the girls 12-Under and 16-Under doubles events.

Servando is one of two Negrense age-group standouts touted to dominate opposition in their respective events during the forthcoming Western Visayas regional meet. The other one is national age-group tennis champion Martina Guba who also grabbed three titles during the Barias Cup Invitational Tennis
Championship in Iloilo City at the height of this year's Dinagyang Festival.

Guba, 13, a second-year high school in La Carlota City, came home with the champion's trophies in the girls 14-Under, 16-Under and women's open categories of the competition held at the Camp Delgado Tennis Courts in Iloilo City.

Reports however indicated that organizers of the regional meet are still looking for an ideal venue for the WVRAA badminton competitions as funds are not available to pay for rental of such prime badminton venues as the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.
