NegOcc has 1.5 M voters for May polls: Comelec
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

THE Province of Negros Occidental has the most number of voters for the May polls, a report from the Commission on Election (Comelec) Western Visayas disclosed.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

Of the more or less 3.6 million voters expected to troop to the precincts to cast their votes, Negros Occidental has a total of 1.4 to 1.5 million voters.

Next are Iloilo City and Province with about 1.1 million voters.

Capiz province has 400,000 voters, Aklan and Antique provinces have around 300,000 while Guimaras has only 90,000.

The Comelec Western Visayas, however, assured the Negrense and Ilonggo people that it has enough Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) ready to serve in the May 14, 2007 elections.

The Comelec official, however, could not yet give the exact number of inspectors that they would need as they are still finalizing the number of precincts they would put up.

Three inspectors are needed for every precinct established, thus, the Comelec will be hiring some 20,000 teachers for the election.

On record, Western Visayas has never experienced the lack of volunteers during election time, Comelec Assistant Regional Director Tomas Valera said.

He is also hoping they would not have the same predicament faced by other regions in the coming May election.

Valera said they would be requesting teachers and some local government unit employees who have the probity and competence to serve as inspectors.
