Editorial: On rabies

RECENT report of the Department of Health revealed that about 300 to 600 people nationwide die every year because of rabies.

One hundred percent of mortalities were bitten by dogs, DOH report added.

This is alarming.

However, rabies is a very avoidable virus if everyone will become responsible pet owners - either of dogs, cats, or other rabies carriers.

Let’s bring our animals to the public veterinary offices near us and have them vaccinated. Its a very simple thing to do in order to save us or our neighbors from rabies infection.

Sometime we tend to be complacent until something bad will happen. It could be worse if your animal’s victim will also be your loved ones.

Almost every year, government veterinary offices in towns, cities and provinces are doing information campaign on rabies. They also offer free animal vaccination.

In Negros Occidental, the Provincial Veterinary Office recently announced its free vaccination of dogs and cats.

We hope that this campaign of the Provincial Government won’t only be put to waste.

We should remember that the Provincial Government is allocating millions of pesos every year for the purchase of vaccines and for the purpose of making Negros Occidental soon a rabies-free province.

But if we Negrenses won’t support this campaign by way of ignoring this, of course, it will cause the expiration of vaccines and worse will allow most of our dogs to stay rabid.

This may result to a dangerous scenario in Negros. One where we may no longer be safe whenever there is a dog nearby.

Let us adhere to a very basic requirement - let us have our dogs and cats vaccinated to make our place a rabies-free community to save everybody’s life.

Let’s learn a lesson from the past.
