Iggy in 'trouble' anew
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

REPRESENTATIVE Ignacio "Iggy" Arroyo Jr. of the 5th district of Negros Occidental is in trouble again.

This time, his problem is with his second wife, Maria Alicia "Aleli" Reyes-Arroyo.

This was after Aleli filed a petition in court for a permanent protection order after she alleged that several armed men have been tailing her lately, her lady lawyer told ABS-CBN in an interview Wednesday night.

But prior to this, Aleli's camp said Iggy had also filed a petition in court seeking for joint custody for their daughter Alelu.

Despite this, Alele's camp said Iggy was still allowed to visit Alelu during the latter's communion and birthday.

But Iggy did not go, Aleli's lawyer said.

Aleli, in answer to Iggy's petition, said since her husband's involvement in the Jose Pidal expose and since his running for congressman in Negros Occidental, everything had changed in their married life.

Aleli's camp further claimed on television that Aleli was only shocked to know in late 2005 that Iggy was allegedly keeping a mistress. The solon was also hooked on different vices and of them is cockfighting.

In reply to the accusations, Arroyo's counsel Perseviranda Abrenica, in a text message to Sun.Star-Bacolod Wednesday night, said his "client's only interest is to have equal and lawful visitation rights."

Abrenica also said that Aleli's recent petition in court is only intended to divert the issue at hand, which is Arroyo's petition to be allowed to visit his 8-year-old daughter.

"The primary concern of my client is merely for the welfare of his child," Abrenica added.

She appealed to public and to the media to respect the couple's privacy as this is a marital problem.

Aleli, a successful banker and stockbroker, got married to Iggy in 1994 following the annulment of his first marriage to Marilen Jacinto.

Iggy and Aleli used to be a picture of a happy couple.

When Iggy ran for congressman in May 2004, Alele was also in the forefront of helping her husband woo voters in the 5th district of Negros Occidental.

In 2005, Aleli was also very active in her feeding and vegetable programs for malnourished kids in the 5th district.

People were shocked when it came out in February 2006 that Iggy and Alele had separated.
