13 squads enlist in NABA inter-barangay tourney
By Henry C. Villalva

THIRTEEN barangay-based amateur boxing clubs have enlisted in the Councilor Dindo Ramos Cup Negros Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) inter-barangay boxing tournament, which reels off on March 31, 1:30 p.m., at the Barangay Punta Taytay Gym in Bacolod City.

NABA tournament coordinator Nonoy Quiatchon told Sun.Star Bacolod Friday he expects more clubs to confirm their participation when the official weigh-in is conducted on Saturday starting 7:30 a.m. at the NABA gym located at the ground floor of the Paglaum Sports Complex.

The teams that have confirmed participation in the event are Granada, Handumanan, Taculing, Punta Taytay, Sum-ag, Pahanocoy, Alijis, Barangay 35, Bata, Mandalagan, Banago and out-of-town entries Payao and La Carlota City's Candelaria Boxing Club.

NABA officials, led by its president and former Bacolod City councilor Juan Ramon "Monju" Guanzon and treasurer Vic Tan, Friday lauded Bacolod councilor Dindo Ramos "for committing P20,000 a month from his share of the PAGCOR funds to NABA for use in the revival of the association's grassroots amateur boxing development program in the city."

"This will certainly go a long way in helping us discover more promising young boxing talents from the barangays of Bacolod City whom we can train to become future standouts in the national team and who will hopefully win more medals in international competitions like Joan Tipon," Tan said.

Tipon, of Purok Rosas Pandan, Sito Sibucao, Barangay Banago, Bacolod City, came home from the 15th Asian Games last December with the gold medal in the bantamweight division.

He was a child prodigy of NABA and was a member of the association's pool of young boxers who stayed at the Guanzon residence prior to becoming a member of the national training pool under the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP).
