2 bolt jail
By Nicolas C. Delfin

TWO inmates of the Silay City Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) escaped jail at dawn Sunday.

The duo were Noli Diga, resident of Bacolod City and Elboy Laurista of Barangay Bagtic in Silay City.

Diga, 35, is serving a two-year sentence for frustrated homicide and another four years and four months for violation of Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban.

He is expected to be transferred to the new Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa, police records showed.

Laurista, 18, on the other hand, was imprisoned for several robbery charges filed against him.

Initial investigation showed that the duo cut the steel bars inside the cell and fled while two jailguards on duty – Jail Officer 3 Edson Tonogan and Jail Officer 1 Dester Santiago, were having their break.

Silay City BJMP jail warden Insp. Nilon Magbanua said prior to the incident, Diga has been transferred to the other detention cell after he had a misunderstanding with one of the jail guards.

He also theorized that the duo had already cut the steel bars inside their cells weeks before they escaped.

"There were eight of them inside the cell but the six others decided not to go with them," Magbanua said.

Magbanua added that manhunt operations are being conducted against the escapees.

Magbanua, on the other hand, appealed to both Diga and Laurista to surrender.

He also asked their respective family to surrender them to the police authorities as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Magbanua said both Tonogan and Santiago will also be investigated for their alleged lapses in securing the inmates during their duty.

"If both will be found liable for negligence, they will be meted with preventive suspension," said Magbanua.
