THE screams were deafening. Amid the usual noise and haste at the SM Event Centre. Quiz High 2007 proceeded with highly intellectual excitement last August 4.
Major players were the top 10 finalists who made it through the elimination round at ABSCBN Bacolod last July 14, coinciding with Trabaho Patrol at the Panaad.
Prepped by their school coaches, the contestants from both public and private high schools in Bacolod City were cheered on by their schoolmates and principals in a pre-taped video produced by Amiga, giving the audience a profile of each contender.
AmigaA hosts Honey Grace Catalan, Carmela Gamboa and Channel Dimayuga, together with Rotary Club of Bacolod’s Rudy Parreno, took turns in grilling the finalists in four categories: Social Studies, English, Science and Technology, and Mathematics. The difficult round further pared them down to the top three, Kam Ho Wong of St Johns Institute, Khara Jane Abuana of Sum-ag National High and Judelyn Cervaqez of NOHS emerged. While tension ran high at ear-splitting decibels, it finally climaxed when Kam Ho sped ahead with three points for which he garnered the Quiz High trophy, Gold Medal and a cash prize of P7,000 while second and third placers Khara and Judelyn won for themselves P5,000 and P3,000 respectively.
Quiz High 2007 is ABSCBN-Bacolods second attempt at raising the intellectual appetite of its televiewers, after a highly successful launch of Quiz High in August 2006. This endeavor brought to the fore the dynamic collaboration of a government entity - the Department of Education Division of City Schools, and a civic group the Rotary Club of Bacolod, as well as a private media network that upholds the highest educational standards while paying tribute to those who conscientiously mentor the next generation of Filipinos.
