THE 1st Monico Golden Gloves Inter-Barangay Boxing Tournament is slated to kick off this October at the Bacolod City public plaza and the Bacolod Arts Youth and Sports (Bays) Center.
This was announced by Representative Monico O. Puentevella during a press conference at his residence Monday afternoon.
The weekends only amateur boxing competition featuring budding boxers from the city’s sixty one barangays is a project of the solon’s congressional district office and will be supervised by Puentevella’s eldest son Monico ‘Nicky Boy’ Puentevella, Jr.
Puentevella, a former commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and currently the first vice-president of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), stressed the importance of amateur boxing saying that members of the RP team which recently won the prestigious RP vs. Mexico World Cup of Boxing “were all products of previous inter-cities amateur boxing championships.”
The staging of the Monico Golden Gloves Inter-Barangay boxing event is part of the solon’s ongoing outreach sports development program in the city’s barangays in addition to the successful Monico Cup Inter-Barangay Summer Basketball Tournament.
The lone district of Bacolod representative in Congress was also recently designated to act as chef de mission of the RP contingent to the 24th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Thailand slated December 5-16 this year.
