Typhoon damage in N. Occidental pegged at P18-M
By Gil Alfredo B. Severino

PROVINCIAL Agriculturist Igmedio Tabianan reported partial damages, which totaled P18,130,535.94 on crops and plantation fields, wrought by almost nine days of continuous rain in eight areas of Negros Occidental.

The damages recorded, according to Tabianan, are from six municipalities namely San Enrique, Pulupandan, Valladolid, Murcia, Isabela, Pontevedra, and two component cities –- Bago and La Carlota.

Tabianan deplored the loss of livelihood among 1,912 farmers working on a total of 6,976 hectares of palay, which submerged in floodwaters for more than a week.

Also, a similar partial report was submitted by Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena covering damages affecting livestock and poultry in eight areas namely Pontevedra, Pulupandan, Kabankalan, San Enrique, Valladolid, La Carlota, Bago, and Murcia.

Decena reported P644,230 worth of domesticated animals in 44 barangays that were affected. But his report did not include individual proprietors’ affected.

According to a statement issued by the Public Information Office of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), the primary cause of flooding that caused crop and land damages are the obstructions along waterways that connect to the sea.

OPA clarified that the flooding are less likely that of receding forest system because of the volume of water in the affected area.

Rain itself was not that heavy but rather continuous for about nine days, thus accumulating in areas where fishponds were once constructed, the statement said.

Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWD) Head Liane Garcia said there no evacuation centers as water flooding were not that damaging for residential houses. PSWD, however, was on round-the-clock alert for possible flash flooding.
